By Lori Montgomery and Shailagh Murray The projected cost of President Obama's plan to overhaul the federal student loan program has exploded over the past year, making it almost impossible to include the popular measure in the same deficit-reduction package that would be the vehicle for the final pieces of Obama's health care initiative, Democratic sources said on Wednesday. In the weak economy, demand for student loans has risen dramatically, driving up the cost of Obama's proposal to expand Pell Grants and provide them to all who qualify, Congressional budget analysts, meanwhile, have told Democratic lawmakers that they are likely to see far less savings from Obama's proposal to diminish the role of private lenders in the guaranteed student loan program because one in five colleges has already abandoned the program in anticipation of the changes. As a result, rather than saving $50 billion over the next decade, Obama's student

by Perry Bacon Jr. The House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly rejected a symbolic resolution calling for the removal of troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year. The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and a group of mainly liberal members who argue the war cannot be won, was defeated 356 to 65, with only five Republicans and 60 Democrats backing it. Democratic leaders took up the measure knowing it would not pass, but wanted to give frustrated liberals a chance to register their opposition to the Afghanistan policies of President Obama, who last December announced an increase of 30,000 troops to fight the Taliban and stabilize the government in Afghanistan.

During a House debate over the war in Afghanistan Wednesday afternoon, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) ripped into the media for not covering the event the way they've covered the sexual past of a certain former congressman. "There's one, two press people in this gallery," Kennedy yelled. "We're talking about Eric Massa 24/7 on the TV. We're talking about war and peace; 3 billion dollars; 1,000 lives and no press! No press!" "You want to know why the American public is fit?" Kennedy added while gesturing behind the podium. "They're fit because they're not seeing their Congress do the work that they're sent to do. It's because the press, the press of the United States, is not covering the most significant issue of national importance and that's the laying of lives down in the nation for the service of our country. It's despicable, the national press corps right now." Kennedy is
